Nombre: Hortensia Pintor Ruiz Nacionalidad: Mexicana País donde trabajó como asistente de maestro de español: Francia ¿Cómo ha ayudado el programa de asistentes de maestros de español en Francia a su aprendizaje de idioma extranjero? Antes de ir a Francia como asistente de maestro de español, yo había estudiado francés en la Alianza Francesa de mi ciudad, pero al terminar los estudios no seguí practicando, además que no es lo mismo aprender un idioma en la escuela que practicarlo con regularidad. Nunca fue muy fluido mi francés, entendía temas de escuela y algunas conversaciones sencillas, pero no entendía realmente tanto como pensaba, lo descubrí al llegar a Francia con el programa, nunca había ido antes. Al momento de llegar, yo pensé “No puedo entablar una conversación compleja, pero seguramente preguntar direcciones y rutas de autobús no será tan difícil”, primer error, no entendí nada, ni siquiera las direcciones para llegar a la casa donde me hospedaría. Estudiar en la escuela y no tener práctica alguna adicional, de verdad no da fluidez en el idioma, recuerdo no entender gran cosa cuando hablaba con la gente el primer mes o quizá los primeros dos meses. Estudiar es importante, pero debes complementarlo con práctica por tu cuenta: música, diálogos, audios, lecturas, si puedes conocer gente en clubes en línea, cualquier contacto te ayudará. Entonces el que se cuente con estos programas es muy positivo para los estudiantes porque hablan con hablantes nativos y eso ayuda a que puedan desenvolverse. Después de mis primeros meses, empecé a entender mucho, creo que mi “chip” de francés se activó, empecé a hablar un poco mejor, para que me entendieran, porque al principio algunas personas decían que no me entendían bien. Luego de 4 meses ya podía hablar con más fluidez, entendía casi todas las conversaciones y aprendía muchas palabras nuevas (no todo lo aprendí en la escuela). No puedo decir que perdí el acento extranjero o que mi francés es perfecto, pero aprendí mucho, pude entablar conversaciones incluso más complejas de que las que yo pensaba que sería capaz. Entiendo a la mayoría de la gente en contextos variados y me fue muy gratificante conocer nueva gente, nuevo idioma, nuevo continente incluso. Hortensia (left), July (middle) and Attianna (right) at Attianna's birthday dinner in Lyon, France 2015 La experiencia docente fue muy gratificante e interesante, enfrenté retos interesantes y también fue agradable el convivir con alumnos y maestros de los planteles donde trabajé, es una experiencia que recomiendo ampliamente, de verdad es muy significativa tanto académica como personalmente, ni se diga de todo lo que uno aprende en cuestión de idioma extranjero, ya que eso vale oro. Comentarios adicionales: Todos los estudiantes que quieran mejorar el aprendizaje de algún idioma extranjero se pueden beneficiar mucho de programas como éste, no necesariamente tiene que ser un intercambio docente, puede ser un intercambio de la escuela donde estés matriculado o un intercambio para perfeccionar el idioma que se estudia, pero el mejor consejo que te puedo dar es: date la oportunidad, pierde el miedo, no te dejes intimidar por la experiencia, ya que tú puedes con eso, y no hay más que ganancias en esta experiencia: ganas aprendizaje, conoces lugares y gente, costumbres y comida, estilo de vida e idioma; lo único que pierdes es el miedo a intentar. Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, Japan Nationality: Jamaican Country in which you work as a Language Assistant/Teacher (Please note city as well): Country- Japan; City- Yokohama How The Program Helped Your Language Development: I applied to the program with very little to no knowledge of Japanese. I came to Japan only knowing how to say "Konnichiwa". Upon being here and interacting with teachers and students alike, I have picked up on certain words and their meanings. Though I'm not versed in the language and still struggle to put a sentence together, I am able to understand what they ask me (for the most part) and I am able to either answer in English or some broken variations of Japanese.  The program gave me the opportunity to be placed in an environment without prior experience or knowledge (of the culture) and to utilize that to my full capacity. Languages have always been a bit difficult for me to learn but aside from the writing and reading, Japanese is fairly easy to speak.  Any other comments?: It's definitely easier to learn a language when you're fully immersed in the culture but it also requires practice and dedication on your part as well. I'm not gonna lie, I could have been further along in my language development, but it is a bit harder being in the city where English is used all the time and even the locals want to talk with you in English to practice. But it does go both ways, as you can also talk with them in Japanese to practice.  Just try your best and even if you don't get it in the time frame you want to, just enjoy the country and what you are able to do while there.  Current Country of Residence: Japan With Love, Mickelia Want to share your travel/ immersion story? Nationality: Jamaican Placement: Dinard, Bretagne, France (l’académie de Rennes) To say my brief 8 months in France helped my language development would be a gross understatement of just how much my stay there impacted not only my fluency in French, but me as a person. Before I went to France, I fancied myself fluent in French. People would ask me about my French language abilities and I would confidently say, “yes, I speak French.” 2.6 seconds after the plane landed in Belgium; that statement was promptly removed from my vocabulary. Living in France was such a humbling experience. I unlearnt so much of what I’d been taught in school I while building on everything I’d been taught since I started studying French years before moving to France. The daily struggle (and yes it was a struggle) revolutionized how I approached language learning and it taught me to be patient with myself. I was reminded after every conversation that I already had all the skills needed to respond without sounding like a fool, I just needed time and practice. It reminded me that language is literally life. It’s everything that happens around us and how we are able to connect with and share those daily happenings. Did my accent improve, yes? But more importantly, I stopped thinking of French as a foreign language the more it became a part of literally every part of my day- from shyly ordering a baguette at the closest bakery, to telling my roommate that she left hair in the bathroom tub AGAIN, to arguing with a customer service agent at SNCF about my 70 euro refund all the way to signing complicated government and bank contracts. After those amazing 8 months in France, I could somewhat confidently say “oui, je parle français.” Any other comments?: My advice to anybody who is interested in immersion on any level, is to just take in as much as you can. It’s okay to feel too shy or afraid to participate in a conversation with native or neo-native speakers in the beginning. Just listen, soak up as much as you can, observe as much as you can, ask as much as you can and before you know it you’ll start using words and expressions you can’t even remember learning.
